A little Lebanese for lunch

Posted by The Fly on May 28, 2008

So I left work about 45 minutes ago… and while driving home, I was trying to figure out what I should do for lunch. I decided to just stay ‘local’ and grab something on Centre Street. I parked in front of Comella’s, but had no desire for comfort food. I noticed that Phuket has a lunch special from 11am to 3pm for $5.95… which is really a great deal. But I didn’t feel like Thai either. I walked up to the Real Deal, looked in, saw the crowd and thought “forget that”. I ventured up a bit further and landed in front of Samia’s.

Now I have lived in West Roxbury for 5.5 years and have walked past Samia’s a million times; I even have a take-out menu. Though I am embarrassed to say that I’ve never gotten food there. The place is always empty, the food cases look empty, heck… I wasn’t sure the place was really open until I saw that the Mayor dragged the Fox news crew there when they did their Zip Trip to West Roxbury two weeks ago.

Falafel. Yeah… I could definitely go for Falafel.” So in I walked.
I was immediately greeted by Samia (I only know this because she was featured on the Zip Trip), who was sort of brash with me. I asked for a Falafel sandwich and she aggressively asked “which one” and tapped the menu that was laminated on the counter. Okay… let’s see. I asked a few questions, got a few blunt answers and finally decided to go with the S-12 Falfel, Hummus & Tabbouleh ($7.50).

I walked across the street to the ATM because they do not take credit cards. I snapped the photo above as I walked back and found that two other people were picking up food orders. My guess is that most of Samia’s business is call-in orders for lunch — from local businesses — which would explain why the place always looks empty.

As for why the food cases are always empty? Because everything is made to order and stored items are probably kept at a minimum to keep food fresh and to avoid waste. A sign posted on the display case indicated that the price of all their items has gone up by $0.50 due to the rising cost of fuel and foods. I can totally understand that.

When I went up to the counter to pay, my sandwich was ready. Samia instructed me to not remove the wrapper and to not cut the sandwich, as I would loose too much filling and it would be messy. She also told me that I should only eat half and wrap the rest up for later — that the sandwich was made for two and that it is very delicious. Okay, now I felt like a fat ass. I must say though… the sandwich was HUGE — easily over a foot long… probably more like 14 or 16 inches — I kid you not. I think Samia was warming up to me, as it was obvious she knew I had never eaten there before.

I got home, unwrapped the sandwich and took a few healthy bites before I snapped this photo:

I grabbed a takeout menu on the way out, but Samia had stashed one in the bag — as if she knew that I would want to come back for more. She was right.

I love falafel and I have not had falafel in a few years. Mostly because we haven’t been to many places that have it. I can honestly say that this was the best falafel sandwich I have ever had. I got halfway through it, as Samia instructed, and realized I couldn’t stop. So I ripped some more wrapper off and vowed that I would only eat to the tear and then wrap up the rest. Let’s just say this — I accidentally ate some of the foil…

The falafel was tender, nutty, savory and not at all greasy or oily. The hummus was creamy and delicious and the tabbouleh was chock full of fresh parsley, red onion and Middle Eastern goodness. The wrap was soft and the tahini dressing was unbelievably good. I cannot say one bad thing about this sandwich, other than it was sinfully addictive.

Samia’s is open for lunch and dinner, but closes at 6pm… so call your order in early and be sure to pick it up before closing time. The menu is filled with traditional Middle Eastern and Lebanese cuisine. Falafel, Baba Ghanouj, Moujadara, Kibbeh, Kabob, Kafta, Stuffed Grape Leaves and various combinations of these items. Sandwiches fall between $5.50 and $8.50 (for the Lamb Kabob & Tabbouleh), though most are about $7 and change. Dinner Plates range from $8.95 for vegetarian dishes to $14.50 for the more meat-centric plates. They also sell their salads and many of their homemade items by the pound and have a few side orders and appetizers as well. Their take-out menu indicates that all the foods are 100% preservative free and that you can also purchase their foods frozen.

What a great decision on my part (if I do say so myself). I had a delicious meal and have found a great new take-out place. AND, if I can actually control myself, The Husband and I can share a sandwich for dinner for only $7.50! Though, I’m not making any promises.

Eatin’ at Eden No More

Posted by The Fly on May 27, 2008

I knew they had closed (and actually — I’ve heard they are moving to a restaurant and a residence on Martha’s Vineyard)… but now The Missus is reporting that the rumor mill (aka Chowhound) has some new gossip regarding the space formerly occupied by the Garden of Eden. Supposedly, Stephanie’s (on Newbury) is moving in. Hmm… more long lines, crowded tables, people watching and over-priced food… or something new and different?

Posted by The Fly on May 27, 2008

I took a little blog break over the long weekend — but I’m back and have some serious catching up to do. Probably won’t happen until tomorrow… but I have reports on Grezzo in the North End, Teatro in the Theater District, news of a Food Network contest, a great place to buy [fruit producing] fig tress in Roslindale, sandwiches in the Back Bay and an update on my vegetable garden. So check back soon!

When life gives you lemons…

Posted by The Fly on May 22, 2008

Take some Miracle Fruit extract (known as Miraculin) and viola… the lemons will taste sweet! At least that’s what Adam Peltz (Chicago Editor of Menu Pages) reports on Menu Pages Boston.

This story was so bizzare and interesting that I had to investiage for myself. According to Wikipedia, this West African berry has been proven to alter the taste of sour (but not bitter) foods and juices. When you consume the extrat of this berry and hold it in your mouth for several minutes (prior to eating), any sour foods you eat (for up to 2 hours after) will taste sweet!

Adam and his friends took the extract for test drive — and had positive results. You can purchase the extrat from Miracle UK. The FDA has not approved the extract for US consumption so it is not available for purchase state side.

In fact, Wikipedia also reports that back in the 1970’s, “…An attempt was made to commercialize the ability of the fruit to turn non-sweet foods into sweet foods without a calorific penalty, but ended in failure in controversial circumstances with accusations that the project was sabotaged and the research burgled by “big Sugar” industry to prevent loss of business caused by a drop in the need for sugar [1]. The FDA has always denied that pressure was put on it by the sugar industry, but refused to release any files on the subject.[2]…”

Hmmm… interesting. I’m a bit tempted… though it doesn’t come cheap at 10 grams for 14 pounds, plus shipping. One gram equals one serving and I’m not even sure there are that many sour foods I need to improve the taste of. However, if this is safe, can you imagine what it would do for the baby food market!

Miracle UK also references a few articles on the stuff if you want to find out a bit more:

The Guardian
BBC
The Wall Street Journal (FYI – I thought up the title of this post BEFORE I saw this entry!)

Posted by The Fly on May 22, 2008

On May 31st, from 10:30am to 3:30pm, the Beehive is hosting “The Bark Brunch” — a dog-friendly brunch that benefits the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS).

According to the press release:

“…Bostonian’s and their pet pals will be treated to an al fresco dining experience complete with menu and fare for both human and pooch alike! Sure there will be the good ol’ eggy items for us two-legged folks via the Beehive – but, the good people at Polka Dog Bakery have also jumped in providing your furry friends with menu selections of:

Beggin’ & Eggs Benedict:
Poached egg topped with a turkey patty over a Polka Dog biscuit

-or-

Blueberry Woofles:
Whole wheat mini waffles stuffed with blueberries and topped with a small dab of a yogurt cream cheese blend

Human food will be served a la carte with prices ranging from $5 – $20; and your choice of the two doggie items listed above are $5 with a percentage of proceeds going the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS’), which is the only national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to protecting companion animals, CAPS’ foremost concern is the abuse and suffering of pet shop and puppy mill dogs. Oprah would be so proud! “We truly appreciate both The Beehive and Polka Dog Bakery making this effort to assist in our important cause.” said Deborah Howard, President of the Companion Animal Protection Society based out of Cohasset, MA.

Make your way down to the Beehive for the food n’ fun on their newly opened patio called “The BEEch” – no reservations accepted – so run don’t walk – but make sure all puppy pals are on leash!”

Sounds like a howling good time! (sorry, couldn’t resist)

Strange food cravings…

Posted by The Fly on May 22, 2008

The Experiment:

Not knowing what to make for lunch this morning… I opted to try something new:

A wrap made with:

  • Hummus
  • Pea Shoots
  • Cracked Black Pepper Goat Cheese
  • Halved and pitted Bing Cherries

It looks good… but how does it taste???

The Verdict:

Updated at 12:03pm: Well, it’s not bad. The pea shoots are a bit messy… as when you bite the wrap, they pull out whole and covered in hummus. They are more suited for a salad… not a wrap.

I think the cherries are ‘ok’, but that grapes would be much better. Perhaps because these cherries aren’t that sweet? I do like the combination of the hummus and goat cheese though… even if it sounds a bit odd, it tastes good. Overall, the wrap is not bad, but not great!

What’s the hoopla all about?

Posted by The Fly on May 20, 2008

I’ve blogged about him before… and now it is time to put my money where my mouth is. Who am I talking about? Ron of course… of Ron’s Gourmet Ice Cream (and 20th Century Bowling) in Hyde Park. Read Ron’s story here.

As I mentioned yesterday, Ron’s has been nominated as one of ABC News’s “Best Scoops in America“. Having never had his ice cream, I figured it was time to high tail it on over there to see what all this hoopla is all about.

Ron’s doesn’t look like much from the outside or the inside for that matter — just an old school bowling alley and ice cream parlor. So why does Ron’s gets such accolades from the ice cream eating community? I was about to find out…

Ron is a humble man who thinks he is the “luckiest guy in the world”. Between his loyal customers, the success and publicity of his business, the amazing homemade ice cream his son still churns and the management and marketing done by his daughter, what more could a guy ask for? I had the fortune of chatting with Ron and his daughter today and thoroughly enjoyed my visit – and the ice cream of course!

Looking over the menu, I struggled to make a decision… so Ron’s daughter gave me a taste of the Maple Walnut (no sugar added) – a seasonal flavor and I was immediately sold. I opted for the kiddie size ($2.75) – which was a heaping scoop (and a half). The ice cream is very creamy, dense (but not too hard), had a great maple flavor and huge chunks of walnut halves.

I also tasted the Peanut Sunrise (another seasonal flavor) – which is a dark, rich, fudge ice cream, with real peanut butter swirled in. I’m not a chocolate ice cream fan… but this tasted like fudge. And I do like fudge!

Ron’s has more than 25 standard flavors and a selection seasonal flavors that come and go with the weather. Ron seems to be very open to flavor suggestions as well. I’m thinking perhaps a weekly ice cream tasting… making my way through the menu? I mean, I owe it to my readers… don’t I?

What I didn’t know is that Ron’s has a second location in Dedham (at 559 High Street) – where the menu is slight different and also offers hard yogurts.

Perhaps next time I’ll try the bowling… it’s been a few years though…
